Separation in Hammer Throw Pt II

Separation

Perhaps not mentioned enough, separation is an important piece of the “what” and “how” of the hammer throw + athlete system of movement.

Most commonly discussed, and indeed understood, as it relates to shot and disc, the general idea is the same.

That idea being, the greater the separation (or angle), the greater the potential for higher velocities.

So what’s the issue?

Effectively achieving separation is not as simple as holding a picture of the position you want to put your body in your mind.

Why?

A throw is fluid.

The difference is theoretical separation vs *real time* separation. When you add the variable of momentum, the problem of how to best create separation changes.

You must consider this.

How?

By letting/being patient/doing nothing/being aware for the ball to get all the way around without you getting eager and pulling it out of its natural orbit.

And NOT holding a position in your mind at all.

The more predetermined positions are used, the more an athlete will pull the hammer [because you’re trying to put the hammer where YOU want it].

Want to throw hammer farther? Increase your separation.

Separation in hammer throw is achieved through Patience

Not preset positions.
